АннотацияThe genus of rust fungi Uromyces (Pucciniaceae, Pucciniales) includes important pathogens with diverse host associations and worldwide distribution. Uromyces punctatus s.str. and several more taxa constitute a complex associated with Astragalus and Oxytropis species in various types of grassland vegetation. The taxonomic identity of most of these taxa remains unclear and their relationships with Astragalus and Oxytropis have been unsuŸciently studied. Intrageneric taxonomy and classification of the genus Uromyces are based on a limited number of morphological and ecological characters. Some species can be easily confused due to similar or overlapping morphological features. Thus, species boundaries within the U. punctatus complex are often not easy to establish, where each species displays a great morphological variability, and the relationships between species are poorly known and in need of critical study. The aim of this study was to define the Uromyces species diversity infecting Astragalus and Oxytropis in the steppes of the Volga- Ural region using an integrative approach that combines molecular (ITS), morphological, and ecological data. In addition, we reconsidered the utility of traditional morphological characters for the taxonomy of the group. The results supported the recognition of three known species (U. punctatus, U. klebahnii and U. anthyllidis) and two taxa, U. heterosporus and U. symmetricus, which are described here as new to science. Our research also demonstrated that morphological characteristics of teliospores revealed by scanning electron microscopy are particularly informative for species identification in the genus Uromyces, and that the species diversity of the genus occurring on Astragalus and Oxytropis is strongly underestimated
